‘OULU DAYS’ IN A NUTSHELL

 

Every year Oulu celebrates the first weekend in September with a huge programme of enjoyable events for all the family. Taking its current form since 1962, ‘Oulu Days’ has become more and more popular every autumn. In recent years the visitor numbers have been between 40000 and 50000 with more than 150 different organisations taking part.

 

The programme has something for everyone. If you’re interested in culture you’ll find folk music, choral singing, literary events and theatre and film exhibitions. For the sporty, there’s a whole host of fun sporting events to take part in and outdoor types the festival includes many fascinating excursions around Oulu.

 

In addition to the jam-packed schedule, the festival includes a number of exciting programmes such as ‘The Joy of Singing’ choir cavalcade and the Volokkarit Folk Music festival.

 

And if you want to really get to know about everything the city has to offer, Oulu Days will be an unmissable opportunity. During the festival, there will be ‘Open Doors Days’ during which Oulu’s various attractions and buildings, such as its museums, will all be free.

 

There are so many exciting events and fascinating places to visit that Oulu Days promises to be a great experience for tourists and locals alike.

 

EVENT ORGANISERS

 

A central idea to Oulu Days is that the city’s institutions, businesses and individuals – whether professionals or enthusiastic amateurs – can have an opportunity to present the exciting services that they have to offer. Anybody who wishes to can present their event idea to the organising committee and all ideas for events in Oulu Days are seriously considered.

Programme of the Everyday EU tour

The Everyday EU (EU arjessa) brings notable persons from the EU organisation to Oulu. The public event challenges residents of Oulu and Nordic Countries to engage in dialogue with EU experts on the European Union and its effects on day-to-day life in the Oulu region. The programme includes visits to educational institutions, introductions to different cultures, discussion events and a public event at the market square.

Departure at 11 a.m. at the Oulu City Hall, return at 12:15 p.m.

The tour of the Rusko waste centre presents the Oivapiste, landfill site and composting plant, and takes you onto the landscaped landfill site. The tour is open for everyone who can fit in the bus. The museum train runs between Oulu and Muhos every hour starting at 11:30 a.m.

10 a.m. Free ride on the Pendolino train: Oulu-Ii-Oulu

Departure at the Oulu railway station.

The ride takes approximately one hour. No participation fee.  Distribution of free tickets at Oulu10 (Torikatu 10) Monday 29  August to Thursday 2 September from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday 4 September from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Organiser: VR.

 

10 p.m. and 12 p.m. Guided bicycle tours to Varjakka

Departure in front of the Oulu City Theatre, Kaarlenväylä 2.

The tour is guided and lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours. Pack your own lunch. 

No participation fee. Remember to take your helmet! You cannot participate without a helmet. Participate at your own risk.

 

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guided mushroom picking tour
Departure in front of the market hall, return at approximately 3 p.m.
Bring a basket and knife, suitable clothing, and a packed lunch. You may even need a bucket for berries. Oulun Sieniseura ry is responsible for guiding the tour. No participation fee. Distribution of free tickets at Oulu10 (Torikatu 10) Monday 29  August to Thursday 2 September from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday 4 September from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Guided Tour of the City in English
Departure at Linnanmaa in front of the Saint Luke chapel (“Pyhän Luukkaan kappeli”, Yliopistokatu 7)  at  2 p.m.  The bus will also pick up passengers at the City Hall, Kirkkokatu 2 at 2.15 p.m. Return to the City Hall at 3.45  p.m. and to the Saint Luke chapel after that. Admission is free, but free tickets are required. A prayer service at the Maikkula chapel, litany at the Matkamiehen risti monument, and activities at the commemorative plaque for refugees from Viena Karelia. Coffee and tea is server in the yard; in the event of rain, the catering will take place in the chapel.
