The Merikoski, Toppila and Muhos power
stations supply the production of heat and electricity. Toppila power
station uses domestic and local fuels but also peat and wood. At the
moment, the province focuses on wind power production. Five windmills out
of 20 that are in the costal area of the Gulf of Bothnia are located in
the Oulu area.
During the Spring 2001, 3 more wind power
stations are going to be constructed. The company WinWind has developed a
one-megawatt turbine that is, thanks to its efficiency and long life
expectancy, supposed to promote the wind power’s competitiveness.
WinWind plans to use the same technology to build 2.5-megawatt turbines.
The whole concept is to build large wind power parks where ten windmills
could operate. The wind energy allows to make savings, is cheap,
progressive and renewable. Besides, the wind power does not let the carbon
dioxide penetrate into the atmosphere or any other kind of polluting
component. The Oulu region has drawn up a sustainable
development program, so-called local agenda, and all companies
whether they are big or just small follow its guidelines. It presumes e.g.
that the wastewater sludge is to be composted into soil and then recycled
in landscaping.
Everybody can attend the trainings and
learning programs about the environment. Besides, the eco day-care centres
and schools strongly focus on environmental issues.
