Preschool in Oulu

" I play and move in Oulu:
With joy I go to preschool!
I learn something old and something new
And I am a part of the future!"

(Eija Törmänen)

A 6-year-old child who begins comprehensive school next year has the right in accordance with the parent´s choice, to a free preschool education provided by the local government.  Preschool will take place 4 hours a day. Preschool complies with the work schedule of the schools.

 What is preschool?

A preschool year is an important phase in a child´s life. Preschool education supports a child´s individual learning process with the function of assisting a child´s development toward becoming a school pupil.

A child learns through activities and plays with other children.  Preschool follows its own curriculum which is based on the national foundations.

Preschool and day-care

Participation in preschool is voluntary. If a family requires child care in addition to preschool, partial day-care fees are charged (daily care lasting less than 5 hours) which is 60 % of the family´s specified total day-care fee. All times when preschool lessons are not provided (e.g. the summer months) the whole day fee will be charged.

Free preschool education is available to families with children in private day-care centres where the local government makes an agreement to obtain preschool services.

The implementation of preschool

Preschool is primarily offered in day-care centres and in the Mäntylä, Pikkarala and Sanginsuu schools as well as in conjunction with the Svenska Privatskolan, Oulun Normaalikoulu, Merikartano school, Leinonpuisto school and Lohipato school.

There are preschool groups in almost every day-care centre.  Groups are arranged in sufficient number of children have been registered (a minimum on 7 children).

A child needing special support is placed either in a preschool group of a day care centre, a small group or into a day-care centre support group.

Registration for preschool

For registraton (for preschool) you can use the same day-care application form that  applies for a local government day-care centre placement.

The registration form is returned to the nearest day-care centre or school that provides preschool.

Six-year-olds in family day-care are provided with preschool in the nearest day-care centre.
