General information on COMPETENCE Oulu 400 project (2005 - 2007)

Expanding the free and wireless panOULU network

The COMPETENCE Oulu 400 project expands the wireless internet in Oulu. 400 wireless local area network (WLAN) access points will be set up in areas where numerous people visit. In these areas the people have wireless internet access free of charge.

Improving citizens' IT skills and accessibility to e-services

The project improves the citizens' IT skills by personal training and guiding. The project also launches a Citizens' Portal with municipal e-services. The use of this service is free of charge.

Participating in European Union's Wireless Cities project

Wireless Cities project accelerates the development and use of new wireless applications and make them familiar among the citizens.

As a part of the project, COMPETENCE Oulu 400 builds a Wireless Innovation Centre to Science Centre Tietomaa, where the citizens can improve their skills in information technology.

COMPETENCE Oulu 400 arranged the Wireless Cities 2006 Conference in June. The conference gathered the top professionals of the field to Oulu. Take a closer look to the conference's issue here.

The project is an 400 year anniversary gift to the citizens

The project is a part of the 400th anniversary gift to citizens from the City of Oulu and it will expire in 2007. The costs of the City's investments are €2,4 million. The main partners are Oulu University, Oulu Polytechnic and DNA (Finnish telephone company).
