PLAN OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GLOBAL EDUCATION
The global education carried out in Myllyoja School is based on the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Global education guides people towards joint responsibility worldwide and enables them to understand dissimilarity. One aim is also to activate pupils to think about why people act as they do. Education for international understanding is a process which starts at home and which has to be supported by school. The aim of this process is to widen children's views of the world. Global education comprises seven areas: human rights education, development education, cultural education, peace and security education, equality education, communications and media education and environmental education. The Strategy of the City of Oulu 2005–2015 and the Strategy of the Department of Education of Oulu also take the significance of internationalization and globalization into account.
When possible, global education implemented in our school also considers the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (i.e. to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development) in a way which is suitable for primary school children.
Our school has been a UNICEF School since the year 2002. Every second year, UNICEF Finland nominates about twenty primary and/or secondary schools which work for UNICEF as UNICEF Schools. The nomination is based of the applications of the schools and UNICEF Finland makes an agreement with the selected schools. The mission statement of a UNICEF School includes speaking out for child rights and situation of the world's children as well as supporting the work of UNICEF Finland for the world's children. We also collaborate with Maailmankoulu, which aims at supporting the schools of the Oulu area in global education. Since the beginning of the year 2010, the Peace Education Institute has been the responsible actor in the Maailmankoulu project, and it also cooperates with several civil societies, the Department of Education of the City of Oulu and the Department of Teacher Education of the University of Oulu.
Our school participates annually in different European cooperative projects like Comenius, eTwinning and Nordplus Junior. If possible, a Comenius assistant teacher works in our school for periods of different lengths every year. The pupils also have their own pen-friends in different European schools. We have a lot of updated material related to global education.
