Oulu’s Young European Ambassador is 18-year-old Sara Akural
Sara Akural, an 18-year-old high school student, has been selected as the Young European Ambassador for Oulu. The selection was announced on 9 May at the Europe Day main event in Oulu. All the cities participating in the Cities4Europe campaign appoint a Young Ambassador who is 18 to 30 years old, active, and enthusiastic about working for his or her city in Europe. The Young Ambassadors will gather at the annual EUROCITIES conference in Edinburgh in November for a future panel together with the cities’ decision-makers.
Oulu’s Sara Akural hopes that Europe would respond to its citizens needs with creativity and participation, achieve the goals of the Paris climate agreement, and include young people in the decision-making. She wishes Oulu to be an active and smart city that offers endless possibilities to young people.
The City of Oulu published the call for Young Ambassador in collaboration with the city’s youth participation programme, Oulu 2026 project, KAAOS project, and Business Kitchen of the University of Oulu and Oulu University of Applied Sciences.
Together with more than 80 big cities in Europe, Oulu has launched a joint campaign entitled Cities4Europe – Europe for Citizens. The purpose of this one-year campaign is to generate discussion about the future of Europe also on a citizen level as well as inspire citizens to create communities and practices that emphasise participation and put people on the forefront. The campaign also aims at bringing decision-making closer to the citizens of Europe.
