Library Collections

The library offers an extensive, up-to-date and evolving collection of printed books. The selection includes fiction and non-fiction in different languages and for all age groups: for adults, youth and children. The e-materials of the E-library complement the physical collection.

Special groups are offered various materials, including large print books, easy-to-read books, simple language books, audiobooks and touch books. 

The loan period for books is usually 28 days. Short loans have a loan period of 14 days, and they cannot be renewed. Short loan books cannot be reserved either.

The library’s magazine selection is extensive and focuses on popularized magazines. Digital magazine services of the E-library and Northern eLibrary complement the collection of printed magazines.

Magazines and periodicals

The latest issue is not available for borrowing, but it can be read in the library. Older issues can be reserved and borrowed. The loan period for magazines is 28 days.  

Old volumes of magazines are stored and can be reserved for loan. Storage periods vary depending on the magazine. 

Newspapers

Newspapers can be read in libraries. They cannot be borrowed. Newspapers are stored for 1–3 months, depending on the paper.

E-magazines

E-magazines provided by the E-library and Northern eLibrary can be read in the library premises on the computers provided by the library or on your own device. Most e-materials can also be used remotely outside the library. Using the services is free of charge.

Microfilms

Annual volumes of local newspapers are available on microfilm. The microfilmed newspapers Kaleva, Liitto, Oulu-lehti, and Rantapohja are located at the Central Library in Saari; others are stored at the Yli-Ii Library. You can access the microfilm reels by reserving the desired microfilms through the OUTI Web Library or at the library customer service. Microfilms located in Saari are usually available for use the day after the reservation is made. Transports from the Yli-Ii Library arrive twice a week. Please wait for a notification that the microfilm has arrived and then reserve an appointment for the microfilm scanner.

Microfilms are not loaned out of the library.
 

The library’s music collection includes CDs and LPs, sheet music, books, and music recordings on DVD and Blu-ray. Musical instruments can also be borrowed. The library has a subscription to several music-themed magazines. 

The most extensive music collection is at the Karjasilta Library, where you can also find music-related magazines and the instruments you can borrow: ukulele, cajon, five-string kantele, acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, tambourine, rhythm bag, banjo and mandolin. The loan period for musical instruments is 14 days, and the late fee is 0.40 €/day. The instruments must be returned back to Karjasilta Library.

Other libraries have music-related materials varyingly.

The physical collection is complemented by the Northern eLibrary services Naxos Music Library, Rockway and Medici.tv. Sheet music by Veikko Juntunen can also be found online. 

The loan period for CDs, records, sheet music and books is 28 days. The loan period for DVDs and Blu-rays is 14 days.

The library has a diverse collection of DVD and Blu-ray films for all age groups. The selection includes movies and TV series, both new releases and classics. Only films with lending rights can be acquired by the library. Streaming service Cineast in Northern eLibrary complements the physical collection.

The library follows the films’ and series’ age limits and does not lend them to people who are too young. 

You can borrow a DVD and Blu-ray player from the Central Library Saari and the Kiiminki Library. Players must be returned to the same library from which they were borrowed. They cannot be reserved, and the loans cannot be renewed. The loan period is 14 days, and the late fee is 0.40 €/day. The replacement cost is the purchase price of the player.

Video games are available for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and Playstation game consoles. You can borrow a maximum of four console games at a time. Video games can be borrowed at the Karjasilta Library. You can also reserve games in the OUTI Web Library to pick them up from your local library. The library follows the games’ age limits and does not lend them to customers who are too young.

Board games can also be reserved in the web library and picked up from your local library.

The loan period for board and console games is 14 days, and the late fee is 0.40 €/day. 

Available are, for example, disc golf sets, street basketballs, kettlebells, snowshoes and sports equipment bags. Games and sports equipment must be returned to the same library from which they were borrowed. These items cannot be reserved or renewed. The loan period is 14 days, and the late fee is 0,40 €/day. 

Availability of game and sports equipment on the OUTI Web Library

Items available for loan include reusable bags, umbrellas, litter pickers, electricity meters, and energy meters. Items must be returned to the same library from which they were borrowed. They cannot be reserved, and loans cannot be renewed. The loan period is 14 days, and the late fee is 0.40 €/day.
