Constructing a first-snow ski trail has begun in Virpiniemi
A stored snow ski trail, also called a first-snow ski trail, is being constructed in Virpiniemi for the 2025–2026 season. Spreading stored snow has begun.
About 7000 cubic meters of snow have been stored in Virpiniemi which is enough to create an approximately 2,5-kilometer ski trail. The final length of the trail depends on the quality of stored snow and the weather. Also, it is possible to release artificial snow directly into the terrain with piping and mobile snow machines.
It is not safe to move in the area during construction due to heavy machinery in the area. Sport Services will announce when the trail is complete and ready to use. The first-snow ski trail will be included in the maintenance monitoring service Fluent once the trail is ready to be used.
Oulu has another first-snow ski trail in Sankivaara. Skiing on first-snow ski trails is free of charge in Oulu.
FIS-quality conditions in Virpiniemi
During the summer, development and renovation work have been done in Virpiniemi to improve the ski trail conditions. Trail profiles have been developed to ensure that the height variation meets the competition requirements set by FIS. Thus, international ski competitions can be held in Virpiniemi in the future. It is also possible to circumvent the highest peak of the trail network along a more leveled terrain.
Skiing directions will change due to the development work. Skiers should familiarize themselves with the renewed signs.
