Early Childhood Education and Care Opening Hour Exceptions

Reduced summer time operations 1.6.–31.8.2024

During the summer, municipal daycare centres located close to each other combine their activities. In family day care, operations are reduced due to nurses' holidays. Summer time absences are reported via eVaka through the holiday survey open 2.5.-17.5.2024.

Private service providers inform their customer families about exceptions to the opening hours of their units.

Early childhood education and care 1.7.-31.7.2024

1.7.-31.7.2024 Most daycare centres will be closed. Daycare centre services are provided in accordance with the Act on Early Childhood Education and Care on the basis of advance reservations.

Client families of municipal early childhood education and care may report a continuous absence of a child/children of at least six (6) weeks during the period 1.6.–31.8., in which case no client fee will be charged for the period of absence. (Board of Education and Culture 26.2.2014 § 28). 

NB: Summertime absence does not entitle you to Kela’s child home care allowance. 

Absences are reported via the holiday survey open in eVaka 2.5.–17.5.2024.

Changes in summertime absences that are compensated for are not accepted without special reason. Such as guardian’s temporary or permanent lay-off, sick leave, or altered holiday time caused by the employer. Written certificates of such changes must be delivered to the daycare centre. 

Are there fees for July? 

There will be no charges for July if the child’s early childhood education and care started before the end of August. Fees are charged for a maximum of eleven months during a year (1.8.-31.7.). 

If a child has started early childhood education after 1.9. and does not need early childhood education and care in July, no fee will be charged. If a child who started early childhood education and care after 1.9. needs early childhood education and care in July, a client fee will be charged for the reserved time.

Municipal daycare centres are limitedly open during Fall break (week 43). Report your child’s attendances and absences in eVaka. 

Fall Break Activity 23.-29.10.2023 (week 43) 

By rule, the daycare centres are open, but some groups and daycare centres near each other may join together. The facility managers will inform the families if that happens. Family day care opening hours may vary due to the carers’ holidays. The family day care managers will inform the families if that happens.  

• Free of charge preschool education is not provided during week 43 
• Open early education clubs are not organized during week 43 (two- or three-time clubs, exercise clubs, family clubs)

Common holiday times cause changes in the opening hours of early childhood education and care providers. During Christmas time 24.12.2022-8.1.2023 municipal daycare centres are open by putting groups and centres near each other together. Family day care activities are limited due to the carers’ holidays. Round-the-clock early childhood care is focused in the Varpula centre in Ainola. All daycare centres are closed on 24.12.-26.12.2022. Private daycare providers inform their customers about their facility’s opening hour exceptions.  

Preschool education and early childhood education clubs are not provided 22.12.2022-8.1.2023.

Winter break activity 4.-10.3.2024 (week 10) 

By rule, daycare centres are open during winter break (week 10) but some groups and daycare centres near each other might join together. There might be variations in family day care provider activities due to the carers’ holidays. The family day care managers will inform the families if that happens. Private daycare providers will inform their customers if there are opening hour exceptions during winter break. Child’s absence from early childhood education and care during the aforementioned time has no effect on the fees. 

Report your child’s attendances and absences in eVaka. 

• Preschool education is not provided during winter break. If the preschool child needs part-time or full-time care during winter break, a full month fee will be charged from the family 

• Open early education clubs are not provided during winter break (two- or three-time clubs, exercise clubs, family clubs) 

Further information regarding early childhood education and care during winter break from the daycare centre manager or family day care manager. 

If a child is absent during fall, Christmas, or winter break, the absences do not affect the fees. 

If the child is only in free-of-charge preschool education and needs early childhood care during preschool holiday times, a temporary contract will be made with the daycare manager. The care dates are charged (17.30 € for a full day and 10.40 € for a less than five-hour day).  

If a child in preschool or early childhood care (full-time) needs full-time care during holidays, the care dates will be charged based on service need.
