Lighting up Finland with blue and white
Light up your home, workplace or other important place with blue and white colors in celebration of independence from December 5 at 18.00 to December 7 at 9.00.
You can also put two candles on your window on December 6 at 18.00.
Flying the flag on the Independence Day
Traditionally, Independence Day is a flag day. The Finnish flag is flown is throughout the city from 8.00 to 20.00.
Enjoying coffee in celebration of Finland on the eve
On the eve of Independence Day on December 5 the city wishes to encourage people to enjoy a cup of coffee with their loved ones at 14.00. No special preparations or stiff atmosphere needed - the shared moment is the most important.
Getting to know the stories of war graves
In the online service oulu.hautausmaat.fi (in Finnish) you can find the grave maps of Oulu's war cemeteries and the stories of the soldiers resting in the graves. More than a thousand soldiers who fell in the wars of 1939–1945 have been blessed in the war graves in the Oulu region.
