Revealing unconscious biases through wearable art

Have you ever thought of exploring unconscious biases and cultural diversity as you make wearable art and sound art? The 9th graders of Oulu International School and Myllytylly school did just that! The conversations were very deep, thoughtful and critical. Just what we need when figuring out and understanding how our choices impact others!

We had great discussions when looking at Social GGRRAAACCEEESSS by John Burnham as well as what cultural aspects are easy to see and what are not easy to see. The discussion around name bias and confirmation bias was so enlightening! Yes, it’s completely normal and natural to have biases, but it’s the self-awareness of why we think this way and what pushes our decisions that makes understanding our biases so relevant when doing active anti-racist work.

Thank you everybody for your presence and creativity! I never thought a scarfe would show how discrimination is felt, how a hat resembles the biases we have, how sounds push our normative ways of perceiving music. I am amazed by everybody’s ideas!

Thank you art teacher Satu Larivaara-Heikkala for your support!
