Underpass at the Oulu railway station closed for the night between 2 and 3 November
The underpass is closed due to the demolition of wall and roof structures on the Raksila side and therefore pedestrian and cyclist access cannot be safely organised in the same space during the works. After the demolition work is finished, the underpass will open to pedestrian only traffic on 3 November.
The works are related to the improvement project at the Oulu passenger rail yard to renovate the current train platforms and build a new platform for tracks 4-5. The project will provide improved access to the platforms and the new elevators, clear signs, and accessible platforms will make getting around the station easier. Two new underpasses will be built for the station, the northernmost of which will be converted into an indoor space. The old underpass will continue to be in cyclist use only. The project will be completed by the end of 2029.
Train passengers advised to reserve extra time
The underpass closure is scheduled for night time to minimise the disturbance to train passengers. The closure will start after the departure of the second to last train of the evening at 20:55. Passengers on the last train of the evening, departing at 23:53, must use the detour. The closure is expected to last until 4:30. This means that passengers on the first train of the morning, departing at 4:32, should be prepared to take the detour as well.
During the closure, the route to the station from the Raksila side will become significantly longer. Access to the platforms is only possible via Rautatienkatu, which means that when approaching from the Raksila direction, passengers must take Kajaanintie or Saaristonkatu. It is advised that passengers reserve significantly more time to get to the station, approximately 15 minutes extra.
If you are taking the last train of the evening on Monday 2 November, which departs at 23:53, make sure to take the exceptional arrangements into account:
- By car: If possible, arrive at Rautatienkatu directly on the city centre side of the railway station. If you are coming from the Raksila side, you will have to walk to Rautatienkatu via Kajaanintie or Saaristonkatu.
- By long-distance bus: If your bus arrives at the bus station on the Raksila side, you will not be able to access the railway station through the current underpass. Walk via Kajaanintie to Rautatienkatu and make sure you have more time than usually to make the transfer.
- By local transport (OSL): Before leaving, check the OSL route guide for the most suitable connection and stop. If possible, take a route that stops in the city centre and Rautatienkatu without going around the underpass.
- By foot from the direction of Raksila: Take the detour to Rautatienkatu via Kajaanintie or Saaristonkatu as marked on the map. Make sure you have plenty of extra time for the walk.
- By bicycle from the direction of Raksila: There is no access through the underpass during the closure even if you walk your bicycle. Take the marked detour via Kajaanintie or Saaristonkatu.
- All passengers coming from the direction of Raksila should reserve more time for the journey, follow the signs in the construction site area, and check the detour in advance on the map. Signs and detour maps will be set up in the construction area for the duration of the closure. Access to the train platforms is as usual from the city centre side during the closure.
Cyclist route through the underpass closed
After the underpass re-opens, for safety reasons, cyclists may go through the underpass only by walking their bicycle. Cyclists are advised to use the alternative route via Kajaanintie or Saaristonkatu during the construction. This arrangement will continue approximately until the end of 2029.
The Oulu passenger railway yard project aims to modernise the platforms at the railway station and improve access routes for passengers and other persons in the area. The works will be carried out in 2026–2029. The joint project of the state and the city is part of the extensive development of the Oulu station area.
