Koiteli

The Koitelinkoski Rapids, also known as Koiteli, is an over three-kilometer-long stretch of rapids in the Kiiminkijoki River. Koiteli is mostly in its natural state. The area is a popular recreation attraction and sees approximately 40 000 visitors annually. In Koiteli, you can hike, fish, enjoy nature and go on a picnic in the many rest areas. The rushing rapids offer opportunities to canoeists of different skill levels. 

Koiteli is located about four kilometers from the Kiiminki city centre. The route to Koiteli is signposted well along Kuusamontie (road 20), and the drive to Koiteli from Oulu only takes about 20 minutes. Hiking trails begin from the parking area where you will also find information boards, toilets and a woodshed. It is also possible to arrive in Koiteli from the north side of the river by Purontie (18717). In this case, you must park your car in the parking area along Purontie about 300 meters from Koiteli.  

Please note that Koiteli might be closed during events taking place there.  

Four islands 

The Koitelinkoski Rapids consists of four islands: Koiteli, Sahasaari, Myllysaari and Tulisaari. The islands are connected by suspension bridges, which children especially love. The islands include multiple firepit sites and a high-quality, marked route network which crisscrosses from one island to another. The route is mostly suitable for baby carriages or wheelchair users with assistants. The route includes some stairs and thus wheelchair users must be accompanied by assistants. The route is not maintained in the winter, but the routes are often in good condition thanks to heavy use. 

Bring firewood 

Firewood is delivered to Koiteli between May and October, and also during the skiing holiday on week 10 and during Easter. However, it is recommended to bring your own firewood since the wood runs out quickly and there is often delay in resupply. Between November and April, you must bring your own firewood. Remember to bring your own sausage-grilling sticks, as the trees and shrubs on the islands are protected.
