The human-nature relationship carries throughout life
Reinforcing the human-nature relationship is a key point of the Learning Stream for Sustainable Future.
A strong relationship with nature directs us towards more sustainable lifestyles. A good human-nature relationship forged during childhood develops into a relationship with the environment that deepens into a sustainable lifestyle and good decisions.
A good human-nature relationship can be learned
We adults, parents, and education personnel carry a responsibility in supporting the human-nature relationships of children and young people. Our inspiring attitudes, examples, and attentive presence form the basis for the child’s and young person’s learning.
The human-nature relationship consists of knowledge, skills, thoughts, attitudes, feelings, and positive experiences. Gradually, we form a connection with nature. We understand that we are a part of nature. When our connection to nature is strong, we feel empathy towards nature, and we want to help and protect it.
Nature around us
The surrounding natural environment has a positive effect on our wellbeing. Spending time in nature actively helps our bodies recover from stress. Nature also helps us treat each other, ourselves, and our environment positively.
Local nature is both a subject of learning and a learning environment for people of all ages. Through diverse nature experiences we can support our children’s and youths’ sustainable lifestyles and wellbeing.
Let’s open the doors, step out into nature together, and enjoy with all our senses.
