Take a survey on your experiences of darkness in the city of Oulu

17.10.2025

The University of Oulu’s Art of Darkness project invites citizens to share their experiences of darkness in the city of Oulu. Indicate good and bad locations during dark hours in Oulu on a map and explain what makes them good or bad.

Art of Darkness as Cultural Heritage of Urban Landscape project examines and develops the usage and experiences of cultural heritage sites during dark hours in five European countries. The collected data is utilized in, for example, an artistic lighting trial which will be implemented in Oulu’s Pikisaari as part of the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture programming.

The project’s long-term goal is to renew urban lighting strategies and development methods by highlighting experiences of darkness comprehensively as part of sustainable environmental development that respects cultural heritage sites.
