Tomorrow's Wardrobe opens the door to a new era of fashion
Rather than asking what people want to wear, the exhibition explores the full potential of clothing as a means of expression. The working methods of the featured designers emphasise ecology, a material-led approach, research into the diversity of gender and the body, and an experimental approach to reinventing the design language of clothing. They break traditional fashion norms and create their work using various techniques such as 3D printing and virtual methods.
"The fashion of the future is born from the courage to imagine things differently. This exhibition provides a platform for visions that explore fashion from a fresh angle. The garments from the featured designers reflect a powerful vision and message," says the exhibition’s curator, costume designer and artist professor Pasi Räbinä.
An insight into current research is provided by an exhibition segment produced in collaboration with Aalto University. It showcases biomaterials and fibre innovations developed in laboratories that could revolutionise fashion supply chains in the future.
The exhibition opens on 22 May and closes in stages: the upper floor on 27 September and the lower floor on 11 October. The exhibition is part of the European Capital of Culture programme.
