Environmental Education

Education plays a key role in adopting a sustainable lifestyle. Sustainable development education has been realized in Oulu based on a special approach. The approach highlights the learner’s individual and active role and agency in gathering information. The goal is to educate eco-socially civilized people who will take care of the future of Oulu and the entire planet. The Sustainable Future Learning Stream guides us toward the goal, its three central themes are relationship with nature, circular economy and climate competency.

Recreational and local recreational areas are often used by schools and daycare centres as learning locations. It is good practice to have at least one recreational area fit for educational use within walking distance of every school and daycare centre.

There are numerous easily accessible learning locations in nature nearby schools and daycare centres to support teaching and environmental education. The locations have been listed by region; in Oulu (including Haukipudas, Kiimiki, Oulunsalo, Yli-Ii and Ylikiiminki), Hailuoto, Kemple, Liminka, Lumijoki, Muhos and Tyrnävä. The field work was conducted in the summers of 2009-2016.

The locations and information slides of the learning locations are found on the Oulu map service (in Finnish). You may read the basic characteristics in the list below.
