Miltä kWh näyttää? – Seeking Energy Understanding
What does energy actually look like – and what does it mean in our everyday lives?
Energy is a central matter in questions regarding sustainable future. In 2026, energy is even more topical than ever before, also from the perspective of individual consumers. The Miltä kWh näyttää? project's goal is to reinforce the understanding of basic education students on energy as part of everyday lives, society, and environment. During the fall of 2026, the follow-up project Haista kWh! will launch. It will continue its predecessor’s work in promoting energy understanding in school life. The target group of the project are the grades 7–9 and upper secondary students.
What does energy actually look like – and what does it mean in our everyday lives?
The project develops measures and learning modules for the older basic education students (grades 5–9) to support their understanding of energy as a part of everyday life, society, and the environment. The goal is to discuss energy in our everyday lives and local environments, realize its connections to different subjects, sustainability themes, society, and future working life. The goal is to increase our awareness as consumers and build a deeper understanding about how each of us is part of the energy story. The activities are suitable to be adapted to the upper secondary level. Energy is a multifaceted topic and supports the studying of learning modules and cooperation between school subjects.
Oulu is committed to be carbon-neutral by 2035. What kind of measures does it require, and are schools part of the process?
The project is part of the city of Oulu’s Educational and Cultural Services’ Learning Stream for Sustainable Future and STEAM in Oulu’s entrepreneurship education activities. The project is funded by the Electricity Engineering and Energy Efficiency Promotion Centre STEK.
