Kempeleenlahti

The renovation of the duckboards is finished but the tower is still being renovated. The tower can be used during the renovation, but only a few people can fit inside at once. The progress of the renovation will be updated on this page.

There is about 80 acres of emersion coast in Kempeleenlahti Bay. Selkäkari in the area is a valuable waterfowl habitat and a Natura 2000 reserve. Zonal flora along the coast ranges from submerged plants and seaside meadows to deciduous forests.

Kempeleenlahti Bay is part of a national waterfowl habitat protection programme. The bay’s bird population includes waders, waterfowl, and sparrows as well as the endangered yellow-breasted bunting. The coast areas are significant nesting, resting and gathering areas for migratory birds.

The one-kilometer-long duckboard nature trail starts from the parking area along the road leading to the airport. The trail passes to the bird-watching tower and back. The bird-watching tower is an excellent place to observe the birds of Myllyojansuu. There are boards along the trail that detail the flora and bird population of the coast. There are no campfire sites in Kempeleenlahti. Please note that it is not permitted to drive on the duckboards with a mountain bike, since driving wears out the boards quickly.
