Find your love of reading – try different reading styles
The Reading Capital Campaign encourages citizens of Oulu to participate in shared reading goals. You can participate in many ways: traditional printed books, audiobooks, or even by combining these styles. You can find your love for reading by following the tips listed below. Enjoy your reading in a way that works for you.
Allow yourself to try reading
Explore the possibilities and familiarize yourself with different kinds of books. Maybe you will be inspired by non-fiction books or comics? All books are not long and difficult to understand. Explore easy-to-read books and plain language books or poems, short stories and verse novels. Choose a book that suits you, try it out, read in short or longer sessions. Try out ebooks or audiobooks. Not finishing a book is also allowed if the story does not feel right to you or feels boring.
Many styles, many languages – we read together
Read alone or with friends or family. You can read in many ways: examine the pictures, tell stories about the pictures to your children or read aloud traditionally. Children have a lot to say about pictures and the parents’ stories. Wordless, quiet books can be read in any way you want and in any language you want. Older kids also like being read aloud to. Make reading and telling stories as accessible as you wish. Spending time together among stories is important. Believe in yourself!
Bedtime stories, books and everyday reading
Children will remember bedtime stories for years. You can fluently slip things from the day’s events into the stories. You can also find bedtime books in many languages. Same books are sometimes available in many languages. Reading in your native language supports your language learning.
When books are visible in your home, it is easy to start reading one. Books become familiar and everyday things. Spread books on tables and shelves in order to keep them visible and easily accessible. Spread your joy of reading to your family by reading yourself. Reading for only 30 minutes every day develops your love for reading significantly.
