Inquiry and Phenomena Based Learning at OIS
According to the Finnish National Curriculum Inquiry-based learning means that students learn by asking questions, exploring, and solving problems. Instead of just listening to the teacher, students take an active role in finding out how things work and why. They learn to think critically and work together.
Phenomenon-based learning is when students study real-world topics (called phenomena) that cross over different subjects. For example, they might learn about climate change by combining science, geography, and ethics. This helps students see the big picture and understand how things are connected.
At OIS the study content is organized into different multidisciplinary units, in which for Year 1-6 students means 5-6 units per academic year and for Year 7-9 one to two different learning modules which combine 2-3 different subject content and assessment.
