Swim School Week in Pre-primary Education

According to the Pre-primary Education Curriculum, all children in pre-primary education in Oulu participate in a week-long Swim School at either Oulu Swimming Pool, Raatti Swimming Pool, or Vesi-Jatuli. Swim School week is part of pre-primary education and is free of charge for families.
 

Goals of Swim School week

The goals of Swim School Week are for the child to learn independent movement in water, get wet, soak their face, and learn to blow air into the water. ECEC centre staff takes care of the children, when in the changing rooms, showers, and transitions to the pool area. In the pool, the swimming instructor is responsible of the group. If a child requires an assistant in the water, the ECEC centre will arrange one.

 

Children’s swimming equipment

Each child needs a swimsuit, towel, and sauna bench towel, packed in a named bag.
Children may bring their own swimming goggles, but goggles can also be borrowed from the facility.

 

Transportation between the ECEC centre and the swimming pool

Transportation to the swimming facility is free of charge (bus capacity max. 50 persons).
Private ECEC centres arrange and pay for transportation independently.

Swimming reservations for ECEC centres

ECEC centre swimming schedules can be found in the file below.

  • Ylikiiminki, Yli-Ii, Alakylä, and Tirinkylä pre-primary groups participate in swimming sessions.
  • Pre-primary groups in Oulunsalo schools join their schools’ swimming sessions and will be informed by the school.
  • Kirkonkylä School, Niemenranta School, Christian School, and Swedish School pre-primary groups swim during the schools’ swim weeks.
  • In Steiner ECEC centres Punavarpunen and Toivonkaari, swimming is arranged during the school swim week from 9:00–10:00.

 

Instructions for ECED centre staff 

  • The ECEC centre must complete the name list and send it one week before Swim School week to:
  • Swim School instructions are available on the first page of the swimming reservation list.
  • Inform the swimming instructor about any relevant matters affecting group guidance.
    • Swimming instructors must be notified in advance of all special needs.
