Allotment Gardening
As a pastime, allotment gardening is refreshing, fun, inexpensive, ecological, and beneficial to wellbeing – go ahead, rent an allotment plot of your own for the summer! Produce grown in the allotments includes potatoes, carrots, lettuce, flowers, and herbs, to mention a few examples.
The City of Oulu annually rents out allotments, about 100 m2 in size, in different parts of the city. In 2012, there were a total of 12 allotment areas in a zone between Kaakkuri and Herukka, Hietasaari and Saarela, and Juurus. There are about 800 allotments available. In 2012, the rent per allotment was €15.
Renting out allotments to new gardeners begins during the allotment garden day held at Oulu10 (address: Torikatu 10) in late May.
Once the ground has been prepared and the allotments numbered, they can be used up to and including September 30th. In autumn, ploughing of the plots begins during the first week in October.
