Water Systems and Water Protection

National aims for water protection are defined in a Finnish Government resolution regarding the guidelines of water protection up to and including the year 2015. The objective is to protect, improve, and reconstitute water systems so that their state does not deteriorate, aiming to ensure that their state is at least good by the year 2015. In sea management, the aim is to achieve a ‘good' status by 2020.

The sea off the coast of the Oulu region is shallow and consists of sheltered bays, and beyond the island of Hailuoto, the deeper open sea. Low salinity and a long period of sea-ice cover are typical characteristics of the sea area off the coast of Oulu. The coast is open and there are few islands.

There are several rivers flowing into the Bay of Bothnia, the largest being the Oulu, Kiiminki and Ii rivers. There are relatively few lakes.
