Touring Exhibitions at Kotilo
The experiential exhibitions of the Lumotut sanat Festival have delighted the citizens of Oulu – and all over Finland through touring exhibition productions – already for almost twenty years.
The literary exhibitions produced by the Lumotut sanat Festival are one way for us to inspire children and youth to read and write. At the exhibitions, stories come to the visitor as they are built into concrete and inspiring places of adventure. The exhibition milieu makes it possible to live, explore, and relax in stories, as well as to come up with your own stories.
Some of our exhibition productions currently touring are Unikudelmia and Minä tykkään nyt – read more about the exhibitions via the links below. Exhibitions Saareen, Riimikissa karkuteillä, and Mainio herra Iloinen ja ystävät have finished their tours – you will find more information about these on this webpage.

Riimikissa karkuteillä
Book illustrations by Karoliina Pertamo
Riimikissa karkuteillä was organized for the Lumotut sanat Festival in 2014 and its touring ended in 2019.
Riimikissa books it from book to book. Goes, giggles, and quips – and meets a group of colorful companions.
Riimikissa karkuteillä is a giggly and colorful literary world built around Karoliina Pertamo’s book illustrations. Pertamo is a new and productive top professional in the field of Finnish illustration art.
The charmingly colorful exhibition presents new and old books through illustrations: poetry, picture books, novels, and non-fiction. The title comes from the book Riimikissa kikattaa - runohetkiä pienille (Tammi 2013) compiled by Oulu’s Children’s Cultural Centre’s literary art teachers.
The exhibition was presented in Oulu, Kiiminki, Hämeenlinna, Espoo, Taivalkoski, Jyväskylä, Vantaa, and Orimattila.
Mainio herra Iloinen ja ystävät 2011–2016
Mainio herra Iloinen ja ystävät
Linda Bondestam’s book illustrations
Mainio herra Iloinen ja ystävät exhibition ended in the spring of 2011 and it toured until 2016.
Mainio herra Iloinen ja ystävät exhibition is a colorful celebration of Linda Bondestam’s book illustrations. Many characters come alive at the exhibition, such as herra Iloinen himself, Gekko, Puupponen, and many other charming characters and strange critters.
The exhibition is a show of respect for modern Finnish illustrated literature. These characters will be popular after decades since these books are future classics. Bondestam’s illustrations waft positivity and joy, as well as symbolic meaning and depth. Bondestam’s gentle and skillful use of the collage technique brings layers and multidimensional surfaces to the illustrations. The illustrations are filled to the brim with intriguing details.
The exhibition was presented in Oulu, Vantaa, Helsinki, Espoo, Hämeenlinna, Iisalmi, Kotka, Kemiö, and Kiiminki.
Saareen 2010–2016
Saareen
An exhibition about water, earth, words, feelings, and stories
Saareen was first presented at the Lumotut sanat Festival in 2010 and was renewed in 2013. Its tour finished in 2016.
Why do mermaids that rise from the ocean disappear without a trace? What happens if you whistle on a boat or laugh in a magic spring? Why is there a grandfather clock on the islet and a cow in the lighthouse? What kind of treasure can be found by following the Stargazer’s Map? Who made the odd painting on the side of the cabin, and what is a dream changer – or a diving bell?
Saareen is an exhibition about water, earth, words, feelings, and stories. It is a multi-sensory art adventure that begins above water, takes you under the water, into a diving bell, and finally onto an island. The exhibition brings island stories by Finnish writers to life and turns them into experiences. The exhibition world contains 32 Finnish literary stories: including illustrated books, fairy tale collections, novels, short story collections, and folk stories of underwater creatures. Find the stories of the island and water that intertwine, reach for the surface, and metamorphose.
The exhibition was presented in Oulu, Vantaa, Hämeenlinna, Raahe, Tampere, Helsinki, Kotka, Kajaani, and Mikkeli.
The exhibition won the Onnimanni Award in 2013.
