Oulu walks – around the globe 16–31 August 2014
Between 16 and 31 August 2014, the City of Oulu Sports and Recreation Services is organising the sports campaign “Oulu walks – around the globe”, devised to increase everyday activity. The aim is to encourage the people of Oulu to move more in their day-to-day lives.
The campaign is carried out by the City Of Oulu in cooperation with sports associations, local communities and workplaces. The progress of the campaign, and the round-the-world journey of the people of Oulu, can be followed on the website www.ouka.fi/ouluaskeltaa, on the City’s UBI displays, and in social media (#ouluaskeltaa).
A hundred stimulating prizes will be raffled among participants: Loop activity wristbands, Omron pedometers, and a hot-air balloon ride.
The main event of the campaign is held at Rotuaari on Wednesday 27 August, 10 AM – 2 PM. The free event, presented by Mikko Salmi, features performances by children’s music duo Liikkuva laulureppu, Aki Louhela, and the Teuvo Pakkala music class. Kari Heljasvaara and Lasse Seppänen talk about and show pictures of their trip to Kilimanjaro.
In addition, the event includes jamming to music by TaukoJamit, hearing the latest news from the patrons of the campaign, leaving footprints at the Kirkkokatu asphalt chalk workshop, and measuring body composition with Inbody measurement on the Eikka bus in front of City Hall. Balloons are handed out to children.
During the week, several sports and culture activities are organised to get people moving. All of the events are gathered at the campaign website. The week kicks off on 16 Aug with the “Likkojen lenkki” jogging event for women. During Arts Night on 21 Aug culture walks are conducted around the city. On 23–31 Aug, sports associations offer demonstrations of their sports around Oulu.
On 25 August, Dr. Heikki Jokinen, a physician specialising in sports medicine, gives a lecture on the topic “Well-being on the go” at noon and at 6 PM in Pakkala Hall in Oulu Main Library. The Nordic walking tour with the Bishop starts from Oulu market square on 30 Aug at 11 AM. The orienteering event “Oulu-rastit” starts from Martinniemi on 30 Aug. The “Family Somersault” event that takes place at Ouluhalli on 31 Aug from 2 PM to 5 PM features fun and games for the whole family as well as presentations of various sports.
Walking with us are the patrons of the campaign: disabled athlete, paratriathlete Jussi Lotvonen, musician Aki Louhela, sports director, footballer Mika Nurmela, deputy mayor Piia Rantala-Korhonen, and former speed skater, starter Jouko Vesterlund.
Come and help us walk Oulu around the globe!
