Alakööki - Developement Unit for Sustainable Development and Cultural Education in Early Education
Alakööki shall
- plan and carry out eventful activities for the daycare unit
- develop and promote sustainable development education and cultural education
- organise activities and visits in cooperation with various cultural institutions and other operators in the City
- operate as the local Green Flag promoter of the Finnish Environmental Education Society
- develop physical education activities at daycare (so-called Mobile Early Education Project)

- promotes the Green Flag Programme by Finnish Environmental Society for daycare centres in the region
- is a member of the Finnish Association of Nature and Environmental Schools
Kulttuurikapsäkki - Team for early cultural education
- promotes and develops cultural education with their expertise and builds rapport
- plans the joint cultural education theme with its starting and closing celebrations annualy
- plans training for early education personnel
The team consists of the early education service manager, cultural producer, kindergarten teachers and Alakööki staff.

- maintains an email list for the cultural collaborators at daycare centres and emails bulletins and tips
- represents early education at the Cultural Team working group containing seven cultural institutions, Basic Arts Education Unit, Education and Young People Services
- organises the so-called cultural godparent activities between daycare and various art institutions they brainstormed
Mobile Early Education
Mobile Early Education is a project to promote children's activity with the main goal in bringing more mobility to a child's day at the daycare centre. The aim of the project is to encourage a child's motor development by sports, creating shared opportunites for sports for the family, encouraging pro-sports attitude in the staff as well as supporting their skills and building up and strengthening the collaborative structures for sports.
All municipal daycare centres are a part of the programme and each daycare centre aims at their goals by individual, daycare centre specific cooperation. The project consider physical education regarding individual daycare centres and needs and conditions; an annual watch for sports is drawn up along with age-appropriate sports plans for each age group to enhance everyday mobility and at the same time to allow the children practise their motor skills in accordance with their development. Collaboration will take place at every daycare centre during the project. The project includes also training programmes and daycare-specific equipment acquisition plans.
A sports coordinator runs the project and is the expert, the pep talker and coordinator helping in achieving the goals. Mobile Early Education is a part of the Mobile School cooperation.
Activities in the nature
Huutilampi forest adventures
In August, a traditional Huutilampi forest adventure takes place in the Timosenkoski Nature School area. The forest elf needs help along the footpath and the troll may require advice regarding the forest and at the same time adventurers have an excellent opportunity to get to know a forest. The adventures are fairytale-like, full of events and activity and contain bits of information suitable for small children.
Hupisaarten Helemi
Hupisaarten Helemi is a good fairy in the city park around Alakööki. Helemi means Pearl and that's what she is, a true treasure for the park and a friend of the animals, plants, rocks and water. In autumn Helemi takes the children to Hupisaaret to watch, explore and sense the nature as well as solve Helemi's tiny challenges. While in Ainola Park, one may also see Roska-Roope.
Tiernapolku, star path
Tiernapolku, star path - with its Star Boy theme is an activity walk in the vincinity of daycare centres. Along the walk, local Christmas tradition regarding the Star Boy play with its cast will be introduced to the participants.

Winter with forest animals
Winter adventure path near daycare centres. Along the path, children see how winter affects animals who live in woods.
Yrtti-Myrtti witch´s easter adventure
Yrtti-Myrtti Witch flies with her broomstick to Kyöpelinvuori, a remote mountain, to spend her Easter with other witches. True to her name Yrtti-. Myrtti i.e., Herbie-Myrtle, she is very fond of all sorts of plants. On her way, she stops to admire and take in the atmosphere and plants at the conservatory. At the same time she organises plants-related activities for groups in daycare.
Early spring
In May the park wakes up: birds sing, leaves are budding, insects buzz and curious tiny ducklings walk up and down the paths. During the nature walk, the daycare group will observe the signs of spring by moving about, playing and exploring.
Coat of arms adventure
Oulu City coat of arms portrays a castle and a salmon. The guided adventure tour to the history of the coat of arms starts at Linnasaari, proceeds through the Northern Ostrobothnian Museum to Hupisaaret and fish ladder. The story tells about Oulu and the birth of the coat of arms in early 17th century. The aim is to find the missing pieces to the coat of arms; it is also an opportunity to learn a little about the castle history and salmon fishing then and fish ladder now.
Bird watching
In May and June guided bird watching tour with activities in Hupisaaret. During bird watching, birdlife is introduced to children through play, investigation and numerous experiments.

The Northern Ostrobothnia museum
At the time of sail boats - a guided tour at the seafaring department to learn about local maritime history throughs stories and exhibits. As we used to live in Oulu a long time ago - aguided tour at the museum introducing Hilda and Peter and life as it used to be in the country as well as in town with the help of stories and exhibits.

Oulu city library
Library adventure for pre-schoolers. At the children's department in the main library, a search for the lost library card while being introduced to rhyme, fairytale, picture and refence books.

Introducing the theatre for pre-schoolers. A guided tour for pre-schoolers introducing facilities and activities at the theatre through a current children's play.
